The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has presented an ambitious development plan during a session of the Omutima Clan’s supreme council, central to which is the construction of a building on Omutima land in Mutundwe, estimated to cost Shs 500 million.
The meeting, which convened at Butikkiro, the Katikkiro’s official residence, was chaired by Clan Head Omutaka Nicholas Kasekende Namugera Kakeeto, and brought together key stakeholders committed to strengthening the clan’s future. Discussions focused on advancing socio-economic development within the clan.
In his remarks, Katikkiro Mayiga, who serves in an advisory role to the clan, emphasized that the required funds are achievable if mobilized collectively, noting that contributions from many individuals can make the goal attainable; to support this effort, a fundraising event has been scheduled for July 18, where members of the Omutima Clan are expected to contribute towards the project and officially launch construction.
Drawing a comparison to global institutions, Katikkiro Mayiga highlighted the importance of financial contributions from members, stating that even institutions like the Vatican rely on funding from their followers. He underscored that cultural preservation cannot be separated from economic development, urging the clan to prioritize sustainable growth initiatives.
Among the proposals discussed were the establishment of a clan Sacco with a formal office, dedicated staff, and affordable share contributions to encourage participation among members. Additionally, Katikkiro Mayiga advised investing in corporate shares, pointing out that joint ventures often face challenges due to conflicting individual interests.
Clan members were also encouraged to embrace digital platforms to improve communication and engagement. This, it was noted, would help keep members informed and foster stronger participation in clan activities.
In his remarks, Omutaka Kakeeto expressed gratitude to attendees for their commitment and time; however, he acknowledged that limited income remains a significant challenge, especially given the clan’s growing financial obligations.
He further noted that the economic reforms introduced under Katikkiro Mayiga’s leadership in the Buganda Kingdom have demonstrated tangible success, expressing optimism that adopting similar strategies within the clan could significantly transform its development trajectory.
“If we adopt structured economic strategies and work together, we can overcome our financial challenges and build a stronger, more sustainable clan,” he said.
